چکیده

Information processing environments have been rapidly changing in many elds: not only changes of network environments and hardware systems, but also enhanced requirements of application systems, database systems, and knowledge-base systems. It is necessary to reconsider how to construct information systems in new environments. For example, in databases, there are many di culties to cope with advanced applications by existing data models such as relational and object-oriented databases. As in scienti c databases, we have to reconstruct fundamental concepts of conventional data models to cope with incomplete and partial objects, heterogeneity of objects, necessity of data mining, schema evolution, and so on. In Japan, the Japanese Fifth Generation Computer Systems (FGCS) project (1982-1993)[2] and its Follow-on project (1993-1995)[3] had accelerated such changes, especially in advanced applications. In the projects, we had confronted difculties in modeling large-scale knowledge information processing applications such as legal reasoning, genetic information processing, and natural language processing. One of the major di culties comes from modeling applications in a single language or a single paradigm. For example, in legal reasoning, we require to embed various features in the system: information retrieval, ordinary database management, logical inference not only with deduction but also with analogy and abduction, and algebraic constraint solvers. How can we model such applications? In our projects, we have designed and developed various powerful languages and systems for knowledge information processing applications[4]. However, each language cannot cover all requirements of the above applications. We started to design such applications based on a multi-agent architecture[5]: a cooperative system consisting of heterogeneous problem solvers, each of which corresponds to a single paradigm. Such systems can work also as a cooperative system consisting of autonomous information systems in distributed environments. Generally speaking, according as expansions of application areas, development of distributed computing environments, and large-scale integration of information systems, a new cooperative framework of heterogeneous problem solvers such as databases, knowledge-bases, constraint solvers, and applications in a distributed environment is indispensable for constructing advanced knowledge information pro-

From Databases to Knowledge-bases

In the FGCS project and its Follow-on project, we have designed and developed a nested relational database management system, Kappa, a deductive objectoriented database (DOOD) language (or a knowledge representation language), QUIXOT E, and a heterogeneous distributed cooperative problem solving system, Helios, for knowledge information processing applications. In this paper, from the viewpoint...

Information Sharing and Knowledge Merging in Cooperative Information Systems

Information sharing is the key issue in cooperative information systems. This issue is studied from a logical point of views in this paper. It is assumed that information in each component system is stored in a knowledge base expressed by a set of logical sentences. A formal method for merging multiple knowledge bases that might connict each other is presented. The method has a number of intere...

A knowledge processing system for data service network design

The knowledge reuse and fusion/transformation system (KRAFT) is research prototype software for combining and transforming constraint-based knowledge. It is being developed in collaboration with BT by three UK universities — Aberdeen, Cardiff and Liverpool. The KRAFT system is designed to help its users to locate relevant data and constraint knowledge held in distributed heterogeneous data and ...

Multi-agent Peer-to-Peer Intrusion Detection

Ever increasing use of heterogeneous networks including mobile devices and ad-hoc sensor networks signifies the role of such information system properties as openness, autonomy, cooperation, coordination, etc. Agent-based service-oriented Peer-to-Peer (P2P) architecture provides attractive (if not single) design and implementation paradigm for such systems. This trend implies coherent evolution...

Applying Java for the Retrieval of Multimedia Knowledge Distributed on High Performance Clusters on the Internet

This paper describes a Java application for interfacing with an Internet based distributed multimedia knowledge retrieval system. The aim of this system is to facilitate the access of distributed knowledge residing on remote computer systems. The motivation for this work is the increasing demand for applications that take advantage of the Internet and local intranets for accessing and integrati...
